Sharing is caring. That is what we were all taught growing up, and it’s something we try to help our kids to understand. How do we go about this? Through talking, playing, and reading.

In the picture book Lenny the Lizard and His Green Scarf, Lenny (who is a lizard if you didn’t know) sees his friends upset. Animal by animal and piece by piece he gives away part of his handmade scarf to cheer them up. In the literal sense, he gives away all he has to make sure those around him are as happy as he is.

The story gives repetition for young readers and listeners to hear and to see the value of sharing over and over. Even as the scarf gets smaller, Lenny doesn’t stop showing his generosity. The illustrations are a calming watercolor that lets the imagination wonder. Together they provide a great bedtime story and lesson for kids 3-5.
